New Supreme Court Rules for Probationers’ Monitoring

Effective January 1, 2017, new rules are in place regarding private agency monitoring of defendants convicted of misdemeanors or traffic offenses and placed on probation as an alternative to incarceration.

Adoption of Emergency Protocol to Address Jail Overcrowding

Jefferson Circuit Court announces the adoption of an emergency protocol to deal with the crisis which has arisen since the Kentucky Department of Corrections (KDOC) recently became unable to routinely take custody of convicted felons ordered to serve a sentence at a facility designated by KDOC.

CARE Program Completes 9th Year of Classroom Presentations

The LBA's Bankruptcy Section has wrapped up another successful year of its CARE presentations, which prepare high school seniors and college students to manage their finances and understand responsible use of credit. The presentations were delivered to 3,300 students at 22 local high schools and two universities on March 16 and 17.

The Legal Aid Network of Kentucky announces the launch of Volunteer Lawyers for Veterans, a program that encourages Kentucky lawyers to volunteer their time and skill to help our state’s low-income veterans resolve civil legal problems.

New Case Management System for Commonwealth's Attorney

The Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office implemented a new case management system April 4, which is not expected to impact court dockets or procedures but will enable prosecutors to function more effectively.

Change to Metro Corrections Cell Phone Policy

Effective Monday, September 21, 2015, the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections will no longer allow visitors to possess cell phones/smart phones within he secure perimeters any of its facilities, including the on-site courtroom and all attorney booths.

Notice of Proposed Amendments to Federal Local Rules

Upon recommendation of the Joint Local Rules Commission, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky propose to amend certain Joint Local Rules of Civil Practice and Joint Local Rules of Criminal Practice as they relate to attorneys practicing before the courts who are disciplined by their admitting or licensing authorities.

Amendments to Court Rules: Effective January 1, 2015

On November 7, 2014 Supreme Court orders were issued for amendments to the Family Court Rules of Procedure and Practice and the Rules of Criminal Procedure. These amendments became effective on January 1, 2015.

OCCC to No Longer Accept Personal Checks from General Public

Effective January 1, 2015, the Office of the Circuit Court Clerk (OCCC) will no longer accept personal checks from the general public. Checks from attorneys that include the firm’s name or the phrases “Attorney at Law” or “Esquire” printed on them will continue to be accepted.

Inmate Calls to Attorneys to be Exempt from Monitoring

The Louisville Metro Department of Corrections (LMDC), in cooperation with the Public Defender’s office and members of the private Bar, has recently taken steps to ensure, for the first time, that outgoing calls from inmates to their attorneys are not recorded or monitored.
