Like you, the LBA is thinking about everyone as they struggle to recover from the impact of the recent hurricanes. We want to make you aware of the Houston Bar Association’s efforts to help attorneys in their city who have been affected by Harvey. They are collecting donations for the “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund for Attorneys” to be distributed through the Houston Bar Foundation to local attorneys who qualify for assistance. You can donate directly HERE. You can also donate to Texas legal aid organizations through Texas Access to Justice Foundation.
As you may know, the Texas Supreme Court issued an emergency order that allows out of state attorneys to provide pro bono legal services on a temporary basis to Harvey victims if they are volunteering through a legal aid program, pro bono program or bar association and meet certain qualifications. If you are interested, the American Bar Association has a flyer explaining how out of state lawyers can apply and register to help answer legal questions from Texas hurricane victims on-line through Texas.FreeLegalAnswers. You can find this flyer HERE.
If you are interested in volunteering or simply want more information about volunteer opportunities, you can contact Lea Hardwick, LBA, Pro Bono/Public Service Director, lhardwick@loubar.org , (502) 292-6729.
