How does the Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service (KLRS) assist the general public with legal matters?
KLRS is a public service sponsored by the Louisville Bar Association that refers callers and web users to attorneys in their geographical area who are qualified to handle their specific legal problems.
What geographic area does the service focus on?
KLRS' primary service area is Breckenridge, Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, and Trimble Counties in Kentucky; and Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Scott, and Washington counties in Indiana.
What areas of law are represented?
Attorneys are available in most areas of law including divorce, bankruptcy, labor law, real estate, foreclosure, wills, probate and worker's compensation.
How are referrals made?
Referrals are made through a series of questions to determine the nature of the caller's legal matter. Once referred, the caller must contact that attorney for further assistance. The attorney will not call you first.
Are free (pro bono) attorneys available?
Pro bono attorneys are not available. However, reduced-fee attorneys are available to those who qualify; qualification is based on federal poverty level guidelines. For those who qualify, reduced-fee attorneys are available for most areas of law. Contact the Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service to find out if you qualify. If you do qualify and would like to receive a referral, please call us at (502) 583-1801.
What is the arrangement with the attorney?
After the referral has been given, the client is responsible for contacting the attorney -- the attorney will NOT contact the client. KLRS attorneys agree to give an initial consultation up to 30 minutes for free. Additional fees should be discussed with the referred attorney.
What if the matter cannot be addressed by an attorney?
If the caller may be better served by a social service or government agency rather than an attorney, the KLRS assistant may recommend that the caller contact the appropriate organization or agency.
